OMA Art Show & Silent Auction Celebrates Creativity & Community

Our recent Opening Minds through Art (OMA) Art Show and Silent Auction was a wonderful success! The event featured 14 artists and 15 volunteers, with 47 unique art pieces on display. We’re thrilled to share that every piece sold. The art show raised $2,580, and with ongoing donations and the sale of older artwork, we’ve already reached $2,800 raised so far. All money raised go directly back into our OMA prgram.

OMA is more than an art program; it is a nationally acclaimed, evidence-based initiative that brings generations together through the universal language of creativity. Developed in 2007 by the Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University, OMA is thoughtfully designed for individuals living with dementia. By pairing participants, our artists, with dedicated volunteers, including students, families, and caregivers, OMA fosters authentic connections and joyful collaboration. The program inspires all involved to focus on strengths, ignite their imaginations, and discover new avenues for self-expression. Through OMA, individuals living with dementia take on meaningful new roles as artists, cultivating pride and leaving a lasting legacy through their unique creations.

Our commitment to reestablish this transformative program at Friends Fellowship Community was made possible through the generous support of a $5,000 grant from the Wayne County Foundation in 2024. Thanks to this vital funding, we were able to train facilitators, secure essential art supplies, and host a vibrant community art show.

Each OMA session continues to affirm the incredible impact of art in building purpose, dignity, and belonging. We are deeply grateful to our artists, volunteers, donors, and supporters who made this art show such a meaningful success—and who help keep creativity and connection at the heart of our community.

If you are interested in volunteering or learning more about this remarkable program, please reach out to our OMA facilitators, Kendra Duty and Jenna Rogan, at 765-962-6546. Together, we can continue to open minds, enrich lives, and support the joyful journey of artistic discovery.
