Find Help and Hope with Memory Care at Friends Fellowship Community

AdobeStock_265650983 (2)Through family, friends, and active listening, we seek to understand the meaningful moments from past vocation(s), hobbies, daily routines, and what brings joy and comfort. This gives our caregivers the necessary information to assist your loved one to obtain the highest quality of life.

Engagement and joy also increase with participation in our programs, like Opening Minds Through Art (OMA) at Friends Fellowship Community. OMA's goal is to help build friendships between people living with dementia and volunteers through art-making. This program and other programs at Friends Fellowship Community add value, promote fulfillment and peace, and provide a sense of belonging and inclusiveness in our neighborhood.

Debra's Story

AdobeStock_611072991Do you know Debra? Debra has risen at 5am every morning; every single morning of her life. She rises with a determined smile and puts on her "get to work" face. It's a combination of understated make-up and determined grittiness. You see, there is nothing Debra cannot handle.

When Debra started experiencing memory loss, she hid her symptoms from those who loved her most. How could Debra be so vulnerable to those who held her at the highest of standards. She was responsible for the grocery lists, the bills, the holidays...

Little by little and all of the sudden Debra started to forget. She forgot the things, then she forgot to leave herself reminders for the things she was forgetting. She began leaving the stove on after lunch, re-washing the laundry that she just pulled from the dryer, and then it happened. She had just left the grocery store in her 2004 sedan that used to be pristine, but has slowly become the beacon of guidance against things like curbs and the wall of the garage. Debra made a left turn, or was it a right? Suddenly things didn't look as familiar as they once had.

Debra spent the afternoon driving around the block, not recognizing her home. This was when the family noticed. It felt like their world had been turned upside down. When did this happen?  How did we get here?

Debra's story is not uncommon. All too often, we try to assist, deny, or ignore the signs of memory loss to help preserve the memories and feelings of safety.  There is so much fear in the unknown. But at Friends Fellowship Community, Memory Care is not just a place to reside, but a neighborhood that assists you in thriving.
