A Center for Alzheimer’s Disease
| The
Courtyards provides compassionate care to individuals with
dementia. This
philosophy is reflected in everything about the courtyards: environment,
team structure, policies and procedures, family involvement and
support. The Courtyards accommodates 48 residents and is connected
to the first floor of the main building.
Features include semi-private rooms, outdoor courtyards,
enclosed porches overlooking the courtyard and kitchen areas for
activities.
Philosophy
of Care
Residents who live within the Courtyards have a diagnosis of
a dementia. Therefore, their functional and
social skills will differ from what is commonly considered
typical for our society. The Courtyards staff recognizes
that care-giving involves a very personal relationship between
people. We also recognize that quality of care begins
with an understanding that a physically and/or mentally
impaired and dependent person is just that - a person.
We view each resident as a multi-dimensional person
with a unique life story. It should never be forgotten
that every resident deserves respect and a chance to maintain
his or her dignity as a human being. We believe that
challenging behavior associated with dementia should be viewed
as an unmet need rather than a deliberate attempt to be
difficult. To provide the care that residents need and
deserve, it is essential to understand and to satisfy such
needs.
Cornerstones
of the Philosophy of Care
| · |
The care provided will promote autonomy. |
| · |
Each resident's strengths will be
identified and maximized. |
| · |
The living environment will be safe and
home-like. |
| · |
The care of each resident will demonstrate
compassion and concern. |
| · |
The care of each resident will be
individualized and recognize each resident as a
person with unique abilities, likes/dislikes, talents,
emotions, thoughts, needs, desires, and histories. |
| · |
There will be opportunities for successful
individual and group involvement and participation in
meaningful relationships. |
| · |
Daily care will be designed to reduce the
emotional and psychological stress of each resident. |
| · |
The staff's professional knowledge, skills
and abilities will be enhanced through education and
support sessions will be provided to maintain their
personal well-being. |
| · |
The resident's family and friends will be
embraced as a part of the Center care-giving team and
provided with support and assistance. |

Meal Services |
Three meals a day plus snacks in the morning,
afternoon and evening are included in the monthly fee. They are
planned by a Registered Dietician and the Director of Food Services.
Regular and special diets are available. Selective menus assure variety.
|
| Housekeeping |
Thorough cleaning of each room is done on a regular
basis. Housekeeping
services are also provided on a daily basis.
Housekeepers, part of The Courtyards’ interdisciplinary
team, are trained in caring for individuals with dementia.
|
|
Security |
The Courtyards is designed with safety as a priority.
Walkways provide residents safe access to indoor and outdoor
areas with sensibly spaced rest stations and points of
interest. To provide
maximum security, while allowing freedom of movement, exits are
secured at all times. A
code must be entered to gain access or exit the Center.
|
| Visitation
|
Family
and friends are welcome to visit anytime of the day or night.
When you visit, please expect a homelike environment and make
yourself comfortable. We
encourage visits, within and beyond the Center.
|
| Personal
Items
|
A
bed, lamp, bedside table and chair are provided for each resident
at no additional charge or residents may furnish their own room.
To personalize each room, residents may bring a favorite chair,
TV, lamp, bedspread, pictures or wall hangings. A television is provided in the living area.
A locked curio cabinet is located outside each room.
This provides space for familiar or meaningful items that help the
resident locate their room.
|
|
The Courtyards Environment
|
The living environment adopted in the Courtyards focuses on an
approach to long-term care that incorporates plants, companion pets,
and children to infuse energy, vitality, and a love of life.
These principles and practices make the Courtyards a special setting
for your loved ones to call home.
|
|
Activities
|
Residents
seem to manage better in structured situations. By structuring
the day around a program of activities, we assist them
in coping better. Everything
we do with a resident, including
activities of daily living, is considered an activity, as is
rest, mealtime, recreation, relaxation and special events.
While
our day is structured, it is also designed to meet the individual
needs and lifestyles of the residents.
For example,
if a resident has always bathed after breakfast or later
in the evening, we will accommodate that routine rather than
complete everyone’s daily care in the early morning.
|
| Family
Support Group |
Families
and friends experience various concerns and need support
in their journey of caring for someone with dementia. We
set aside time to provide a safe arena in which families and friends
may express feeling and concerns, obtain practical information
and provide and receive support from others.
|
| Laundry
Services |
Sheets,
bedding and towels are provided and laundered daily. Personal
laundry is done once a week. Dry
cleaning is available at
an additional fee.
|
| Transportation
Services |
Residents
who leave the facility for visits or appointments should be
accompanied by family or friends.
Transportation and a staff member
are available to accompany the resident for such outings at an
additional charge.
|
| Nursing
Services
|
Round-the-clock
nursing care is provided in the Center.
All medications
and treatments are dispensed under physicians’ orders
by a licensed nurse.
